Digipack rough ideas - With Sandhya Gulsin

This is my first idea and initially my favourite idea from the off because it is very personal as the band are all over the digipack.

The second digipack that I made includes more of the character from the narrative part of the video.

Colour Adjustment - Sandhya Gulsin

When reflecting on the outcome of the rough cut, something that caught my attention was the clarity of footage. I wanted to create a "cinema" type affect as I believed it would add poise and power to our video. In order to attempt to edit the video producing the crisp clear footage, I had a lot to learn. The tutorial above shows the first part of the process in which I had to learn to use Premier Pro. By looking at these tutorials I was more able to use the program In which I had never used before.

The second part of the process was adjusting the colour of the different connecting clips so there was a colour balance between them. The three way colour corrector on Premier Pro allowed me to do this.

The third part of editing the colour was lowering the saturation to support the "rock" genre. The image captures below evidence the difference.
After adjusting the colour I then was able to add the "Cinematic" affect. For the black and white footage I used "Cinematic 1" and layered it twice. From our previous feedback the use of sepia footage was proposed, so by doubling the affect, this adjusted the footage colour ever so slightly in between black and white and sepia. As the screen capture below shows, the footage clarity after colour editing is immaculate.
For the rest of the footage I used "Cinematic 2" and when reflecting felt certain parts of the video still needed further editing as it seemed to overly edited resorting to parts looking  too dark.

Strobe or No Strobe? - With Sandhya Gulsin

After receiving feedback on our rough cut, me and Jake decided that there was no place for the strobe lighting. Although the footage was very successful it had no place in our video. Our target audience agreed. The video below shows the outcome of some of the footage that will not be used in our final music video, but still plays a part in the process of trial.

Magazine Advert Analysis 5 - Sandhya Gulsin

This is the advert for the Kings of Leon album 'Only by the Night'. When seeing this poster I instantly noticed that the same image was used on the Album cover. This allows the audience to find a common link between the two. The same font is used throughout the poster showing consistency and I find this very simplistic yet visually appealing as the image maintains the viewers’ attention. The album name is placed under the image but supports its colours, suggesting the connection between the two. The image itself contains an illusion value combining sections of each band member’s face alongside what appears to be an owl. Owls are commonly known for being in there prime at night, both awake and aware. This links the title of the album to the imagery. Although the release date is placed at the bottom of the page its vibrant red colour will appear from afar to the audience.

Magazine Advert Analysis 4 - Sandhya Gulsin

My fourth advert Analysis is of Florence and the Machines Tour promotion poster. Although it doesn't focus on Album covers, I felt it was effective to evaluate the common links and differences between the two types of posters. The font used for “Florence + the machine” is the same font used in all of Florence and the machines album covers and posters, this shows a common trend to the target audience in which they are then likely to make links. The Cosmic Love tour is placed directly under in a different font showing the connection yet it stands out on its own. The text colour is white and maintains throughout. I feel this works well as it does not draw attention away from the main image. The main image shows Florence placed on a prop of the moon which is encouraged in the video of Cosmic love. It is very powerful in showing mystery and would link well visually to a cosmic world. The tour dates are shown below the image and contact numbers also are placed directly under making it only visible to see when close-up. This differs to an Album cover as the placement of dour dates and locations would normally be visual space or show respected critique reviews.

Magazine Advert Analysis 3 - Sandhya Gulsin

My third magazine analysis is of a personal favourite Poster promoting and album called Given to the wind by The Maccabees. This poster has a very simplistic approach for advertising. The bandname is presented in a very abstract format splitting "Maccabees" up in to the mould of a square. "The" is in very small print withing the M of the "Maccabees." Unlike the other Advert Analysis's this one has no image of the band but the image is of a graze field set alight. There is also a structure placed in the centre which almost represents a be-hive. It also visually links to the work by Andy Goldsworthy exploring structures created from the natural surroundings. Below the structure is the Album name and the release date. This is then followed by an Album review from NME. the NME crtique review complitely dominates the bottom of the page as there is nothing to follow after.

Magazine Advert - Sandhya Gulsin

For my first advert design I decided to go for a simplistic approach in which I was hoping would still be powerful and effective. From previously seeing the "Kings of Leon" advert I was inspired to split the 4 members of the band into quarters.
This is my second advert design, when reflecting I am unhappy with the 3 different fonts as I feel they do not work well together. If developed further this will be changed. The reason being why both initial advert designs have minimal writing is because I feel I need to collaborate with Jake and decide what the further information should be.

Final Location Visit - With Sandhya Gulsin

Before the day of shooting at Littlewood Barn, Me and Sandhya thought it was essential that we went down there so that we could do a bit of extra planning and have an advantage on time when the day came. We took a few images to help us when we got home.

The barn was absolutely stunning and we we're lucky to be filming in there. There was already lighting inside which could be moved and turned on and off separatly. There was also discrete plug sockets which were even hard to find at times and they were scattered all over the place so that was a lot of help.

Call Sheet - With Sandhya Gulsin

To help with our planning and the smoothness of the day of filming we needed to create a call sheet so that it was proffesional and everything was clear to us and the band.

Feedback - With Sandhya Gulsin

After we had completed our initial rough cut, both our class and the other class in our year all sat in one room and watched each others rough cuts with pen and paper at the ready to give constructive criticism on the work so far. Below is the feedback that we got.

Music Video Mood Board - With Sandhya Gulsin

This video evidences the production of me creating a mood board of a more refined selection of ideas that both me and Jake have for our music video. At this stage in the research production of our music video the moodboard should evidence a development in ideas as well as the most successful ones.

What is a Digi-Pack - With Sandhya Gulsin

What is a Digi-Pack?
A Digi-Pack is the package the song comes with if you buy it physically. Normally this includes a graphic front and back including copyright owners, name of the single, name of the band and sometimes other information, plus the CD and sometimes an advertisement or inner slip of paper. It is typically made out of plastic or cardboard with either CD slots or sleeves.

What are the advantages of a Digi-Pack?
There are advantages for the seller and the customer with purchasing a digi-pack. The front of a digipak almost acts as a controlled exposure to what the artist does and doesnt want to reveal about themselves. It is likely to embody a theme and a message about the artist and/or the content of the album. This also strongly supports brand image. The artist and the digipak work alongside eachother almost promoting each other in which obviously soley bennefits the artist. It could be argued that from an audience perspective purchasing an artists digipak establishes a loyalty to the Artist.

Editing/ Filming Schedule - With Sandhya Gulsin

As filming is coming closer we felt it was time to get a schedule together and begin our final planning phase. Below is our first plan.

After analyzing we decided that we needed to have another look over and redo it.

I also created a checklist to make sure that we took everything we needed and more on the day and so that we also came back with it.

Iconography - Sandhya Gulsin

In music video production, producers reflect on the iconography of previous videos that in which creates an expectation for each genre. Iconography in media is;"Discussing imagery as iconography in this way implies a critical "reading" of imagery that often attempts to explore social and cultural values. Iconography is also used within film studies to describe the visual language of cinema, particularly within the field of genre criticism." In this post I am going to explore theiconography in both indie and rock videos then evaluate how they both compare. In order to reach out to our audienceand make our video successful I have created a glogster of iconographic things in which are needed to make our music video an all-round success.

Group Dynamics

My group consists of me and my good friend Sandhya Gulsin. I feel we work very well together as we have similar tastes in music and styles of video and we also have similar levels of ambition with this project.

I think that we will be able to get to conclusions easily by discussions and be able to meet each other in the middle to create a video that suits both of our styles.

Video Analysis Four - Sandhya Gulsin

This is Sandhyas analysis of the song by Kings of Leon: Use Somebody.

Video Analysis Three - Sandhya Gulsin

Video Analysis

Metronomy- Thing for me

My video analysis addresses the indie element of indie/rock. This video is also a personal favourite, so my analysis will refer to how the video successfully attracted me in being a member of the target audience.

Location- The video itself is the perfect contrast between the real word vs. imagination. The locations are a continuation of enclosed room and outside space in which suggest an adventure, but the props used within the scenes help manipulate the location into something extra-ordinary.

Artist portrayal- The Artists open the song in presenting themselves out of their normal nature. their characteristics are exaggerating in much more of an effeminate manner. This alongside their dress code can only be assumed to be done in order to compliment the song. The fluctuation of "random" outfits compliments the variations of scenes.

Props- In this video the power of props holds more than the power of mis-en-scene. Although the locations of scenes continue to fluctuate and progress, the power of the props make it evident to the viewer the "type" of location.

The Ball- Although this comes under the title "props" the use of the ball controls the progression of lyrics, the rhythm of the music, the movement of the people and most of all the outcome of the video.

People- In this video the power of people are almost in-humanised to suit the unusual nature of the video. To distinguish the band members they are shot in various scenes as a collective.

Lyrics- Unlike the trend of most music videos the use of written lyrics in a karaoke type format is one of the main conventions in this music video.

Double vision- Although I have previously analysed projection, this video portrays projection in almost a comic strip format.

Editing- The high frequency of cuts from shot to shot may feel to extreme and uneasy on the eye, so the use of flow and continuation is essential.

Elements of creativity- I feel the layout of the video in general consists of a variety of creative elements mainly the use of text. I felt editing played an important role not only to this video but to all music videos.

This video is a manipulated version of the original, I analysed it thoroughly and explained my thoughts as the video un-winded. Throughout the video there are grayscale scenes, these I did intentionally in order to depict powerful elements of the film.

what is the benefit of the artists portrayal in this video?- The quirky feel to the video was intentional as unique presentation and an inventive perception will always attract attention. This has inspired me to attempt to experiment and develop initial ideas even if I doubt its outcome. A negative factor would be that the audience is of a indie/rock genre whereas this video has a strong focus on indie. Also my perception of this video may be miss-understood and to scattered to other members of the niche market.

Overall meaning
After taking into consideration all of my analysis I felt more able to discover a meaning to the song. I felt the video encourages a lack of seriousness supported by the lyrics in suggesting the first attraction between companions in which they "like" each other in more than a friendly manner but not as intense as a relationship. As the lyrics unwind the line "You've got my heart you know" addresses the element of love and how one person cares more than the other. Although the lyrics express emotions the beat of the song and the humour in the video personifies this and almost alienates the situation from reality.

I felt my analysis was to basic, I created a presentation in order to develop on my initial points addressed in my previous video analysis.

Storyboard 1 - With Sandhya Gulsin

The next step was to actually create a rough draft of the storyboard. This process took 52 minutes to complete and that wasn't including the ideas down on paper. This was very challenging but I feel we worked very well together and communicated ideas effectively.

Narrative Sequence Initial Ideas - With Sandhya Gulsin

To come up with a storyboard me and Sandhya first decided to brainstorm our ideas for the narative to see whether we should keep them all and what ones we can put where and so on.
