What is a Digi-Pack - With Sandhya Gulsin

What is a Digi-Pack?
A Digi-Pack is the package the song comes with if you buy it physically. Normally this includes a graphic front and back including copyright owners, name of the single, name of the band and sometimes other information, plus the CD and sometimes an advertisement or inner slip of paper. It is typically made out of plastic or cardboard with either CD slots or sleeves.

What are the advantages of a Digi-Pack?
There are advantages for the seller and the customer with purchasing a digi-pack. The front of a digipak almost acts as a controlled exposure to what the artist does and doesnt want to reveal about themselves. It is likely to embody a theme and a message about the artist and/or the content of the album. This also strongly supports brand image. The artist and the digipak work alongside eachother almost promoting each other in which obviously soley bennefits the artist. It could be argued that from an audience perspective purchasing an artists digipak establishes a loyalty to the Artist.

Iconography - Sandhya Gulsin

In music video production, producers reflect on the iconography of previous videos that in which creates an expectation for each genre. Iconography in media is;"Discussing imagery as iconography in this way implies a critical "reading" of imagery that often attempts to explore social and cultural values. Iconography is also used within film studies to describe the visual language of cinema, particularly within the field of genre criticism." In this post I am going to explore theiconography in both indie and rock videos then evaluate how they both compare. In order to reach out to our audienceand make our video successful I have created a glogster of iconographic things in which are needed to make our music video an all-round success.

Effect the Song has on an Audience

I wanted to research the effect the song has on more people than just my family and friends so I looked up live performances of the song and watched the crowds reaction.

The song seems to be some sort of anthem to the fans of The Killers. It is a song that appears at every appearance and is definatly a fan favorite and a good song to "jump to". This means that we have a lot to live up to with our video and it must be of a very proffesional quality.

Video Analysis Four - Sandhya Gulsin

This is Sandhyas analysis of the song by Kings of Leon: Use Somebody.

Video Analysis Three - Sandhya Gulsin

Video Analysis

Metronomy- Thing for me

My video analysis addresses the indie element of indie/rock. This video is also a personal favourite, so my analysis will refer to how the video successfully attracted me in being a member of the target audience.

Location- The video itself is the perfect contrast between the real word vs. imagination. The locations are a continuation of enclosed room and outside space in which suggest an adventure, but the props used within the scenes help manipulate the location into something extra-ordinary.

Artist portrayal- The Artists open the song in presenting themselves out of their normal nature. their characteristics are exaggerating in much more of an effeminate manner. This alongside their dress code can only be assumed to be done in order to compliment the song. The fluctuation of "random" outfits compliments the variations of scenes.

Props- In this video the power of props holds more than the power of mis-en-scene. Although the locations of scenes continue to fluctuate and progress, the power of the props make it evident to the viewer the "type" of location.

The Ball- Although this comes under the title "props" the use of the ball controls the progression of lyrics, the rhythm of the music, the movement of the people and most of all the outcome of the video.

People- In this video the power of people are almost in-humanised to suit the unusual nature of the video. To distinguish the band members they are shot in various scenes as a collective.

Lyrics- Unlike the trend of most music videos the use of written lyrics in a karaoke type format is one of the main conventions in this music video.

Double vision- Although I have previously analysed projection, this video portrays projection in almost a comic strip format.

Editing- The high frequency of cuts from shot to shot may feel to extreme and uneasy on the eye, so the use of flow and continuation is essential.

Elements of creativity- I feel the layout of the video in general consists of a variety of creative elements mainly the use of text. I felt editing played an important role not only to this video but to all music videos.

This video is a manipulated version of the original, I analysed it thoroughly and explained my thoughts as the video un-winded. Throughout the video there are grayscale scenes, these I did intentionally in order to depict powerful elements of the film.

what is the benefit of the artists portrayal in this video?- The quirky feel to the video was intentional as unique presentation and an inventive perception will always attract attention. This has inspired me to attempt to experiment and develop initial ideas even if I doubt its outcome. A negative factor would be that the audience is of a indie/rock genre whereas this video has a strong focus on indie. Also my perception of this video may be miss-understood and to scattered to other members of the niche market.

Overall meaning
After taking into consideration all of my analysis I felt more able to discover a meaning to the song. I felt the video encourages a lack of seriousness supported by the lyrics in suggesting the first attraction between companions in which they "like" each other in more than a friendly manner but not as intense as a relationship. As the lyrics unwind the line "You've got my heart you know" addresses the element of love and how one person cares more than the other. Although the lyrics express emotions the beat of the song and the humour in the video personifies this and almost alienates the situation from reality.

I felt my analysis was to basic, I created a presentation in order to develop on my initial points addressed in my previous video analysis.

History Of Music Videos - Sandhya Gulsin

Below is a Timeline made by Sandhya showing important events in the history of music videos which helped them progress into what they are today.

Target Audience

UK Tribes was an experiment if you like set up by channel 4 to find social groups in today's world between different people.

After using UK Tribes to narrow down who our target audience is, we figured out that our target audience are alternatives.

After figuring out who our target audience was the next step was to get actual images of our target audience, what they look like and what they wear.

About our target Audience:
I can almost base our target audience on myself because I can imagine myself in the audience.

Our target audience would spend a lot of time on the internet. They will spend time shopping, browsing and talking to their friends on social networking sites. They will also hide themselves away in their room and listen to music. They can rarely be found watching TV and sometimes playing video games. They can be found wearing skinny jeans or chinos. Denim jackets, leather jackets, even blazers quite smart looking attire compared to other genres.

Average Time Spent on the Internet Per Week: 20 hours +

Time spent on social networking sites: 10 hours +

Favorite Shops: River Island, Topman, Bank, Schuh

Favorite bands: The Killers, Greenday, The Strokes

Music Channels

MTV Rocks
Owner: Viacom International
The logo is very Bold and brutal its right in your face and the black colour is generally related to most types of Rock music. The green around the typeface underneath separates it out from all the other MTV channels and also gives the logo a sense of madness. I also like the fact that the "M" is in 3D whereas the rest is in 2D. I would say the age group that this channel will vary from anyone who is 15 years old to anyone who is 30 years of age.

I feel this channel would be very suitable for our music video.

Viva
Owner: Viacom International
The font and the colour of this logo suggests false sense of quietness and calm, but when you think about it the bright pink colouring it gives you the impression of dance and night clubs. This channel would definatley attract the younger age group, I would suggest noone about 25 would watch this channel.

This channel would not be appropriate for our music video.

Kiss
Owner: Box Television
The Kiss logo is very similar to the Viva logo. The logo's colour sometimes changes colour and the version I found I think suits the music channel the best. Maybe because its purple people may say that its more feminine and maybe more females do listen but it is very much a multi gender channel. The logo suggests a very energetic channel and once again more of a dance and techno channel. The age group that would watch/listen to this channel I would say would be very large from around 12-40 years of age.

I don't think this channel would be appropriate for our music video.

Kerrang
Owner: Box Television
This logo just shouts out rock music. The lines throughout suggests cracks in the logo due to loud music and the font is also quite aggressive as are the colours. The age group that would mainly watch this channel would be approximately ages 15 to around 30.

This channel would definatley be suitable for our music video.

Exploring the instrumentals behind the lyrics

When I was exploring the instruments involved in the song I came across a guitar cover by someone who played every part of the song excluding the lyrics for both guitar parts and bass parts.

After watching I realized that obviously the band don't have that many guitars and that a synthesisor for the guitar is not necessary and the more common instrument is a keyboard which the lead singer plays towards the end part of the song. So I researched some more and found a single guitar cover which only needs the addition of a keyboard, drums and bass guitar.

Watching these covers made me realise the importance of having actors that actually know how to play their instruments so I asked my friend to learn some of it to consider my possibilities.

History of The Killers

...

The Killers are a well known American Born Rock Band formed in Las Vegas, Nevada over 10 years ago now in 2001. The band consists of four members including lead singer; Brandon Flowers. Lead Guitarist; Dave Keuning. Bassist; Mark Stoermer. And drummer Ronnie Vannucci. rumour is that the name The Killers came from the logo on a bass drum in a fictitious band portrayed in the new order song; "Crystal"

The band have released four studio albums which are; Hot Fuss, Sam's Town, Day & Age and Battle Born. They have sold over 20 million copies. They also released other albums including a live album from the Royal Albert Hall, and a compilation album called sawdust. They also have a Christmas album called Red. Recently they released a greatest hits album named Direct Hits.

In 2001 it hit Brandon Flowers that he wanted to be in a rock band, so he started his search and found an add from a guitarist called Dave Keuning in a local newspaper. They had similar influences and began writing songs together. At this early stage they had recorded 4 songs, Desperate and Four Winds which were never to be released and early versions of Mr Brightside and Under the Gun. They started playing small venues and handing out versions of their demo. They brought something different to Las Vegas at the time. Drummer Ronnie Vannucci and bassist Mark Stoermer were members of other bands and were eventually persuaded to join the original double. The Killers didnt break through at all in the American music industry but did in the English in 2003 when they signed with Lizard King Records. From there the Killers were born and made their way to becoming one of the biggest rock bands ever. On August 19, 2003, one of todays greatest hits, Mr Brightside was aired live on Zane Lowes BBC Radio 1 show. This let to UK shows and copies of Mr Brightside which they realeased only a few of in different versions including Vynl. As a result from the publicity they had generated in the UK they returned to the US a different band and soon signed with American Record Label, Island Def Jam.

When Playing live they have always been one for the theatrical with fireworks lights and whatever they can get away with that will get the crowd buzzing. I can say from expirience as I have seen them twice now that their live performances are unreal and cannot be compared to any other bands. They came on 20 minutes early at Wembley in the Summer so that they could play a record 24 songs.

The Killers have always been creative with their discography and have brought out something new and interesting for every album, which is fashionable at the time.

The Killers Look is also something completely unique to them. They looks so different yet so right for each other. The way they are very mature and dress smartly really is an influence to other bands. Brandon Flowers, The Killers main man, has admitted to having fashion issues over the year, not knowing his own style, hense the feathered jacket but after 10 years he has finally found a style which is now connected with him, his leather jacket and all black look.

Families thoughts on what the song means

I filmed my family when I let them listen to the song when you were young with the lyrics, i then asked them what they thought the meaning behind the video was.

Location Possibilities

These ideas are for the live performance location. Other locations will only be featured shortly.

Field Gravesend, Abandoned Swimming Pool, Hall Christchurch, Wrecked Garage, Bluewater Car Park, Road (close), Church

Through putting it on the map I could see how easy each location was to access and also judge whether we would need permission to shoot there.

Song Possibilites

You Me At Six - Reck-less
This song is an option because I really like the beat and the lyrics to this song and they also suggest that love is blind.

The Killers - When You Were Young
This song is an option because its a brilliant rock song with soft verses to a heavy chorus.

All Time Low - Circles
This song is all about a relationship going around in circles constantly. Quite a heavy song throughout.

Avril Lavigne - He Wasn't
Another song about a relationship but this time about it not working out. Woman lead vocalist.

All Time Low - Running From Lions
A metaphor for running away from a relationship for reasons unknown.

All Time Low - Lullabies
A metaphor for losing someone you love, "waiting to say, I miss you i'm so sorry"

All Time Low - Therapy
The song that everyone who has had or has depression will understand more than others.

Blink 182 - I miss you
A song about missing a loved one. Quite a slow song into a bigger ending.

Lost In Colour - Searching for the sun in the dark.
A heaving song. metaphor for every cloud has a silver lining.

How a Stars image develops over time through music video

The star who's image development I am analysis is Alex Gaskarth, Lead singer of the American band All
Time Low. Alexander William Gaskarth was born on the 14th December 1987 in Essex, England. When he was only six years of age his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. This is where he and fellow band mate Jack Bakarat created the band All Time Low in their first year of high school.

Alex is lead singer for the band All Time Low and the genre that they cater for is mainly the punk rock/ punk pop genre.

In the earliest official video Alex is presented very much as just a typical teenage punk rocker. The long hair the skinny jeans and the fact that they will jump to anything with a decent beat to it. The video is from 2005 so when they were around the age of 15/16 and is a very simple video. In this video because they aren't that well known at the time the lead singer doesn't take as much of the camera time as they would today. They are just portrayed as an amateur band, and not a lead singer with musicians behind him/her which is how I feel music videos are made nowadays.

For example when he is singing the chorus the majority of the time the camera isn't actually on him, its elsewhere, its on them mucking around on the sofa, its on the bassist, its on the drummer. (1:30 - 1:50). To be honest from this video he isn't shown to have any star image as of yet.

Alex, well the whole band really are never specifically playing a character as they are always playing themselves but in different roles. They have had one video where they aren't playing themselves and they are based on someone else and this was for the song "I feel like dancing" and was a mimic of pop icons music videos for example, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Although Alex has never played a character he himself has been in many different roles; These include being on a chat show, being on a singing competition, being a mole in a whack a mole machine, and many others but most commonly he plays himself as a lead singer in a band.

In nearly every one of their videos he is performing, he is rhythm guitarist and lead singer and in the majority of the bands music videos he is included in a live performance. The most obvious one is for song TimeBomb. This is one of their newer up to date videos and in fact the idea for the video was thought up by Alex Gaskarth, Who has a lot more time on the camera than he has in previous videos.
The main visual motif that comes with Alex When hes performing is mainly the fact that he stands with his guitar slanted down the side of his body. He will also play it that way when he is playing live, its a habit I think but its turned into a motif that you recognize him for. As you can see in the image hes holding his guitar and slanted to the side. Although he doesn't do this all the time he does also switch sides.

A more obvious visual motif is of course his hair. It is if you like his trademark. It hasn't changed dramatically since the band first originated and therefore he is recognized for it. The long scruffy look. It may have changed minor in colour over the years including; black, blonde and even pink but never strayed from its original style. Other motifs include his stereotypical punk clothing for example skinny jeans and T-Shirts with writing on them.

The record company don't attempt to sell the star specifically they attempt to sell the band with Alex's Face. The record company is Hopeless Records, and when you go on their website they appear regularly.

Alex is at the front of the main image with his trademark hair flaring to the right. What they are doing is using the lead singer to sell the band pretty much which is a good tactic because as the band portray in one of their videos, although it is a band, the lead singer gets most of the original attention. Its only fanatics that then move on to the other band members when they get to know them a bit more.

During the Videos there are regular close ups of Alex when hes singing and when hes playing guitar or a certain role. He is the face of the band and this has changed a lot since the band first got together. When people say All Time Low people now think of him.

The videos very much present Alex and the band as who they are. All the videos are very creative, very different from any music video that has been produced before and that really reflects his personality and that affects his star image positively. All the videos involve props and some sort of dressing up. In the song "Six Feet Under The Stars", He is dressed up in a white flat cap, pink shirt and large sun glasses. This gives him a showoff, kind of vibe. In "Backseat Serenade" he is dressed up as what I can figure is a dog costume. This gives him a sense of immaturity and takes them back to the young band they once were. His costumes very much go with the theme of the video and are not placed specifically for him although he is a major part of the process.

For example, in the video for "Coffee Shop Soundtrack" he is wearing a towel as is everyone else but due to the filming you notice it on him first before any of the band members because due to his prestige he is positioned in the middle of the band because maybe he is considered the most important?

In most of the videos a Fish eye lens is used to film Alex because he is centered and it makes him seem larger in the image therefore more powerful and more impressionable.

In the bands newest video; "A Love Like War" Alex is pretty much at the front of nearly every shot throughout the video. This shows a correlation on how a stars image changes through their career, compare this to their original circles video and how much Alex was involved then compared to now. Alex is even on the thumbnail of the video. As the camera pans around during this video Alex's face is always the first one you see. The camera is set at the same height throughout and this is done so that Alex is the one you see the one the video is based around.
Applications that have come around during the existence of the band have also helped music videos and the way they develop. For example Youtube. Youtube has changed music videos as well as lots of other filmed media. But the way I watch and analyse these videos is through Youtube, so now Youtube is the target audience.

In conclusion, Throughout the time that All Time Low has been a band, it was only when they became popular on a small but still worldwide scale that their music videos started to reflect more on the lead singer now but I say more because its not entirely. A quote from the drummer Rian Dawson: "We are each one part of this band" and they know this which is why although their videos have changed since 2005, they aren't completely mainstreamed as others are today. Alex has developed massively though and you can see it, from a young immature teenage bouncing around to a mature man who still enjoys the music that he makes. But not only the video has progressed with him, his music as well. It was a lot more towards the rocky side when they started but as time went on they have edged towards pop punk. His image is a lot more important nowadays and it has change significantly since the band was created.
